WASHINGTON, DC – The crop inputs sector marked a continued commitment to product stewardship with the launch of ResponsibleAg, a new initiative in corporate and social responsibility in the fertilizer industry. “ResponsibleAg is open for business,” said Tim Cansler, executive director of the new program, on its December 8 launch date. The program will focus on industry transparency and accountability, with the goal of improving the safety and security associated with the storage and handling of fertilizer products.

ResponsibleAg will assist agribusinesses nationwide as they seek to comply with federal environmental, health, safety and security rules regarding the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products. Participation in ResponsibleAg is voluntary and is open to any business that stores or handles fertilizer products.  Many ResponsibleAg participants are also participants in CropLife’s StewardshipFirst program.  “Seeing different components of the agricultural chemistry industry working in stewardship programs cooperatively, paves the way for progress,” stated Jay Vroom, president and CEO of CropLife America.

The focus of ResponsibleAg for the first three years will be on companies that store and handle ammonium nitrate fertilizer and/or anhydrous ammonia fertilizer. “This is an exciting time. We have had tremendous support from industry and state agribusiness associations to get ResponsibleAg up and running in just under a year," Cansler noted. The CropLife StewardshipFirst program is a commitment by the crop protection industry to provide safe, healthy and plentiful crops that feed and clothe a growing population. It is hoped that, through science-based discovery, StewardshipFirst will help global agriculture economically produce safe, high quality, abundant food, fiber, and other crops, thus ensuring food security and alleviating poverty, suffering and hardship.
